A perineoplasty or perineorrhaphy is a procedure that tightens the opening of the vagina. The perineum is the area between the vagina and the anus. This area is stretched and separated during a vaginal delivery, which may result in a gaping or lax vaginal opening/perineum. Some patients may have excess tissue, which causes irritation and may make hygiene more difficult, in this perineal area.
This procedure involves re-approximating the perineal muscle to tighten the opening of the vagina and smooth the skin over this muscle so as to reduce irritation and facilitate good hygiene in this area. It will also improve the appearance of the vulva and increase friction during relations at the vaginal opening.
This is often done in conjunction with a vaginoplasty and/or pelvic reconstructive surgery. This procedure can be done in the office or the operating room depending on patient preference. A perineoplasty alone, takes about one hour to perform and the patient is able to go home that same day. It is not usually covered by insurance. Our staff is happy to discuss pricing and financing options should you decide to have this procedure.
